About The literacy hour

History

The Literacy Hour is the brainchild of Dr. Kentrell Liddell.  The broadcast has been on the air since November 2022.  The show reaches a listening audience of approximately 7,000 weekly on three radio stations in Mississippi. The show streams online and is heard on Tuesdays from 7 AM until 8 AM (CST), a prime listening time for people who reside in the service areas.

Topics

On successive Tuesdays, topics related to education literacy, health literacy, financial literacy, mental health and wellness, and technology literacy, including the impact of artificial intelligence on healthcare innovation, are discussed.

Impact

The Literacy Hour serves a diverse population, including the underserved, of varying ages, ranging from teenagers and young adults to middle-aged and elderly listeners. This targeted approach ensures that accurate health reporting reaches those who will benefit most from the programming. Each episode aims to empower listeners by providing them with accurate information and trusted resources. For example, the host and guests describe certain procedures, define specific lab values and medical terminology, and discuss clinical research findings in culturally relevant terms. By involving community members in the dialogue, the broadcast builds trust and creates a sustainable framework for community engagement.

We believe that this public, collaborative approach is essential for health reporting. We also hypothesize that the broadcast possesses solid potential to offer even broader benefits and to be transformative in the short- and long-term by enhancing policymaker health literacy, which could possibly facilitate development of better-informed health care policies on a local, statewide, and even a national level.

Literacy is knowledge, and knowledge is power. Being literate means having power - the power to improve our lives, the power to help our neighbors, the power to make a positive contribution to our world.
